Do you ever feel unsure about your future? It’s like no matter what you do, task after task seems harder than ever, with little to no reward or light at the end of the tunnel. What if I told you it is because of your lack clarity and vision, would you agree? I've been there, jumping around across many jobs, thinking the corporate route would make me happy, then starting my business, but what I really needed was a vision. I quickly learned that if I wanted to change the trajectory of my life there is only one way to make that happen with ease, I NEEDED TO CREATE A VISION AND LIVE INTO IT EVERYDAY. I am going to walk you through a 3-Step process of how you can create a powerful vision that drives you to be more in a effortless, simple way.
What is a Vision?
When you create a mental picture of what your ideal dream is your creating a vision. It’s your optimal future state. It tells you what you want to achieve overtime. "To be clear, a vision is not a strategic plan. It articulates where you are going and the plan is how your going to get there" (inc.com).
Why do you need to Create a Vision?
Creating a vision creates hope, excitement, and most importantly, an idea of where you want to go. Without creating a vision for our lives and our business we are left with too general of an idea of where we want to go and little guidance on how to get there.
When Should You Begin Creating Your Vision?
No time is better than the present, however you have to do a couple things first.
- Set aside 1-2 uninterrupted hours where you can really think about what you want to do and why.
- Get a pen and a piece of paper so you can do a brainstorm and look back on your ideas.
How I Help Others Create a Vision They Didn't Even Know They Wanted
I work with people all the time that just need someone to help pull their ideas out of them, to think bigger and expand their ideas of what is possible. Sometimes we don’t even know there is something we want until someone else asks us those pressing questions.
I am going to walk you through my process that I use with my clients so that you can create a vision that stands still in the long term, while also effortlessly working toward it each day.
“All things are created twice; first mentally; then physically. The key to creativity is to begin with the end in mind, with a vision and a blue print of the desired result.”Stephen R. Covey, Writer of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
First, most people get wrapped in the practical and what they tangibly see. I help you become more emotionally in tune with your process and ideas. If you keep a practical mindset, you will stay small and dream small.
Your brain naturally wants you to be safe and stay away from risk. That flight or fight response.
So, in order to take your vision to a level that steps out of your comfort zone, sometimes you need someone to help you see what is actually possible and that you are 100% worth of achieving it with just a bit more dream and elbow grease.
The other thing is that creating these types of big ideas happens over time. It’s not just thought up and put on paper in 5 minutes. It takes ongoing intentional thinking and action, we're talking about your life and your business, not just what you need from the grocery store.
The goal is to ingrain this vision into your daily life so it comes simply and effortlessly.
Setting the Tone for Your Vision Creation Session
Before I get into my Three Step Process for Creating a Powerful Vision I gotta set the tone.
I always tell my clients to make sure that they have blocked out a solid 2 hours of uninterrupted working time where they can get introspective and plan on a good writing session.
PRO TIP: Have a mindset that this exercise should come easy, freely and effortlessly. Don’t think too hard, just write and put your thoughts on paper.
3 Step Process for Creating Your Vision
You want to have a vision that fits you and your dreams, you want a vision that gives you clarity so the first step is starting with you.
1. Getting Clear on You
The best way to know where you want to go and what you want your life to look like is to do a bit of introspective thought.
Ask yourself these questions to start:
- What are the values that you carry with you everyday? What are the beliefs that make you, well you?
- Name the top 5 most important things in your life?
- What can you not live without?
- Where do you picture yourself living in 5 or even 10 years?
- What are the 3 qualities you have that you are proud of?
- When you are in a bad mood, what is the one thing that cheers you up?
- What does the perfect day in 5 years look like for you from start to finish, list out the details? How does it feel, where are you, what does life look like?
- What is the one thing that you do that let's you be 100% yourself?
You may be wondering what some of these things have to do with your vision, but I challenge you to just give yourself the time to answer them truthfully. When you do this, you will feel liberated, you will feel good about yourself, and the things that mean the most to you.
2. Getting Clear on Your Business
Now that you have an idea of the things that make you happy, feel fulfilled and content, both now and in the future; let’s dive into the vision for your business.
Ask yourself these questions:
- What is it that you would love (not just like) to create for your business?
- What is the impact you want to make in the world.
- If you continued on the path you're on now, would you be truly happy?
- What is the one thing that you truly give a shit about in your business?
Now, Stop what you are doing,
Put the pen down and go with me for a second.
I have put together an audio vision meditation to help you dig deep into your soul and get clear on what you want. If your ready to take the next step and get clear on what your deepest vision is, I invite you to download this free meditation.
This things you just wrote down are possible. You were made to do incredible things. You were made to be more than the biggest idea that you have in your head. It may not relate back to what you are doing now and that is okay.
It may feel so far away and unattainable and that is okay.
This is your vision. You can decide to keep to it to yourself. You can write it down and not tell anyone or you can start working toward it.
3. Living into your Vision
I had this exact experience when I was at a conference. All the emotions and visions that I had living in me had never made themselves known until that moment. It brought me to tears, literally welling tears.
I had no idea I even wanted this thought. I had no idea that thought was in me until I went through this meditation. Sometimes, I still feel tempted to keep it to myself because it is so big, so audacious that no one in my life would be able to foresee those ideas.
So I keep it in a box and have been working toward it everyday. I know that this vision will change as I grow my business, but I have accepted it as the driving force to become something bigger than myself.
I want you to take the vision you wrote down and make a conscious choice to work toward it everyday.
Now, where to start?
How to Start Living Into Your Vision While Working to Achieve It
In order to start living into your vision you need to make a conscious effort everyday. But, where do you start and what does that look like?
Break your vision down into the most simple version of it. You cannot be an overnight success without putting in the effort first.
Once you have an idea of how you want to live in 10 years, start talking about it with the person you care the most about. They are going to be by your side through it all, so tell them some of the small dreams you have. Talk about where you want to live, how you want to work, who you want to work with.
Be Intentional with your Time
Be intentional with your time and make an effort to focus on the smaller activities that help you make progress. This could look like starting to network with a new group of people in your area of interest. This could be making new connections on social media and doing so through creating meaningful conversation.
Be mindful. Try to incorporate the values you carry in your personal life into your work. They don’t all need to align, but when you become more mindful of what means the most to you in life and carry those beliefs into your work, things will start to naturally gravitate in that direction.
Be mindful of what your head is telling you. That means if you are creating negative stories of what you cannot do and what isn’t possible you need to first recognize those negative thoughts and change or rewrite your beliefs into a positive head space.
Simplify and Focus
Simplify your days and remove what isn’t serving you so that you can make time for new activities. That may mean giving something up so you can make room for larger activities.
Whether it is journaling about your vision or writing about some of the smaller ideas that go along with it, keeping top of mind is important. The more you pursue your vision and create actions of moving toward it each day, the closer you will get to it over time.
“Focus time and energy on things that can be controlled.”- Franklin Covey; 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Know What Will Get In Your Way
If you're like me, you will create goals and then the next week you're on to the next. Your goals may change overtime as you navigate life and the roadblocks you encounter, but your vision most likely will not change much.
There will be roadblocks along the way and that life right? So how do you best prepare yourself?
Don’t Fall into the Mindset Trap
You know those feelings of being inadequate, how you're not good enough, how that person who is two steps ahead of you is already doing it and how could you possibly do it better. Stop.
This is what we call imposter syndrome. It can be real easy to let the negative mindset and doubt creep in.
In order to get through these shitty mindset blocks you need to first be aware that you're doing it. You will be your biggest roadblock and so knowing when those thoughts are starting to creep in and what to do about it is a huge win.
Notice when you are having those thoughts and try to distract yourself; close your apps, shut down social media and focus on the things that help you progress rather than hurt your mindset.
Raise Your Vibe
BECOME MORE AWARE THAT, “YOUR PERCEPTION SHAPES YOUR REALITY.”
We all have been wired from a young age to believe certain things are true and not true about ourselves and others. It may have been our parents, society, or what we learned in school. These beliefs have been ingrained in our heads from a very young age. Sometimes we aren’t even aware of the beliefs that may be holding us back.
Here is an Example: One of the most common phrases I hear is, “I don’t have enough time.”
Instead of thinking this way, shift your perception into abundance and tell yourself that, “I have all the time in the world for the priorities that are the most important to me.”
Ultimately, the things that you do not like to do or that you do not have are that way because YOU DECIDED THAT THEY WERE SO.
How to Change your Perception.
Try to put yourself in the driver’s seat and envision yourself as the writer of your own story.
Everything comes down to the decisions you make. As you decide to be in charge of your perception, you can rewrite your next steps, the way you interpret the world, and how you respond to it.
The Law of Attraction states that what we know to be true is not the limit, but that we can create anything, any goal, or any dream. Seeing is not believing, believing is seeing your direction and opportunities.
When you believe that something has the capability to happen, you will confidently exude these things and great things will come to you.
A Few More Things You Can Do To Prevent Roadblocks
- Ask yourself what YOU are doing to prevent your own success. Most likely you have mindset blocks or you are preventing opportunities from happening. Here are a few things that may be preventing you from growth.
- Skills: determine what skills you will need in 5 years and start working toward them now.
- Growth Mindset: be aware of the fixed mindset creeping in and be okay with being vulnerable.
- Inaction: be aware of the things you are avoiding.
- Make your job your identity and be okay with that: Are you spending time or investing time?
- Fear of Judgement will prevent you from taking risks. Let your failures become part of your journey and be okay with failing.
- Identify the habits that are helping or hurting you. Prime yourself every day for the day you want to have. Get rid of the bad habits that aren’t serving you.
